Dua Lipa has always had the natural essence of a “cool girl.” Even going back to one of her first music videos, “New Love,” where she wears everything from a bellowing floral kimono to a University of North Carolina basketball jersey. And while her sense of style has significantly grown since the 2017 release of her self-titled album, the Grammy winner still knows how to have fun with fashion, which is why we love to watch and emulate Lipa’s looks. Over the years, the YSL beauty ambassador has mastered everything from high-fashion glam, grunge, and become the patron saint of the sheer dress. And when you have friends like Donatella Versace and Simon Porte Jacquemus on speed dial, it’s hard not to look fabulous.
In 2020 Lipa became everyone’s pandemic pop princess when she dropped her Grammy-winning alum Future Nostalgia, which took us from a quarantine hard place to the club. She became the girl everyone wanted to party (and vacation) with, and that was reflected in her clothing, from glittering chainmail Versace pieces to neon Mulger body suits from her Future Nostalgia World Tour. But a year after Mermaid Barbie (and a whole lot of pink), the “Dance the Night” singer has entered her Radical Optimism era—accompanied by a care-free, laissez-faire allure and some vibrant ruby red locks, which have shifted her style in an edgier, more daring direction. Some would say she’s gravitated towards the dark side, embracing more black and red hues, but I look at is as the Versace muse taking more fashion risks with the help of stylist Lorenzo Posocco. Like the gold embellished black Schiaparelli gown she joked about being unable to sit in at the 2024 Golden Globes, or the red Valentino trench with golden ball studs she sported at this year’s Grammys. But no matter what era the Argylle star is in (or what color her hair is), you can always count on her to show up and show off.
Whether she’s clad in Versace on the runway, glittering in Mulger on the stage, or rocking an oversized hoodie in the Glastonbury fields with boo Callum Turner, Lipa never fails to look cool, stylish, and unapologetically herself. And even if there are some haters out there that don’t approve of Lipa’s fashion choices, her anthem “IDGAF” is what comes to mind.
