Donald Trump re-shared a crude sexual comment about Kamala Harris on Truth Social, amplifying the right-wing talking point that the vice-president has used sexual favors to advance her career. The post, which the former president “reTruthed” on Wednesday, is a screenshot of an exchange on X, in which a user replied to a photo of Harris and Hillary Clinton by writing, “Funny how blowjobs impacted both their careers differently.”
The comment is comparing Bill Clinton’s in-office sex scandal with Monica Lewinsky to the fact that Harris dated San Francisco mayor Willie Brown in the ’90s while he was speaker of the California State Assembly. During their relationship, Brown appointed Harris to the state Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board then to the California Medical Assistance Commission. The couple broke up two years before Harris was recruited to become an assistant district attorney in San Francisco.
Nevertheless, the claim that Harris’s relationship with Brown is what launched her career has plagued her for more than 20 years. While running for district attorney in San Francisco in 2003, her opponents attempted to paint the same picture that Trump is now. Speaking to SF Weekly at the time, Harris acknowledged that Brown was an “albatross hanging around my neck.”
“His career is over; I will be alive and kicking for the next 40 years,” Harris told the outlet. “I do not owe him a thing.”
At this point in her career, Harris does not comment on this issue anymore. When the New York Times reached out to her campaign for comment on Trump’s repost, its request was declined.
Of course, it’s not surprising to see Trump share crude and sexist remarks about his female opponent. The former president has been accused of sexual misconduct several times and frequently bashes women for their looks or describes them as “crazy.” With Harris, he’s also taken to hurling racist attacks at her, recently claiming that she “happened to turn Black” a few years ago.
